Risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is variable among patients with FH. Although risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in familial hypercholesterolaemia have been described, models for predicting incident ASCVD have been not reported. SAFEHEART (The SpAnish Familial HypErcHolEsterolaemiA CohoRt STUDy) is a prospective, open-label, multi-center, long-term follow-up study of a cohort of people with genetic diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in Spain.
Based on data from the SAFEHEART study, researchers from the Family Hypercholesterolemia Foundation have developed an equation to estimate the risk of cardiovascular events at 5 and 10 years in patients with FH.
This equation, its fundamentals and details of the study have been published in the prestigious medical journal Circulation (Pérez de Isla L, Alonso R, Mata N et al. Predicting Cardiovascular Events in Familial Hypercholesterolemia: The SAFEHEART Registry. Circulation 2017;135(22):2133-2144).
